We've all seen it. LOL is the Internet's cheap aftershave.

But does it have a purpose? In short, yes.

Someone (no idea who, but I did read it somewhere so it must be true) suggested there should be some kind of notation in the margin one could apply when one was being ironic in one's writing.

That never arose.

However, LOL is the perfect way of expressing a raised intonation or sarcastic inflection that is denied one in written communication.

So, the phrase:

"I am going to vote for David Cameron."

Can be changed, better to express my meaning:

"I am going to vote for David Cameron. LOL."
